Books for Sale

Books about Jewish scientists and technologists and their theories, discoveries and applications in all ages.

In the context of this on-line bookshop, Jewish is defined as an adjective to describe those scientists and technologists who were born into the Jewish faith or who converted to Judaism (Jews of Choice). They may adhere to the tenets of Judaism to varying degrees. Science means the investigation of the structure and behaviour of the physical world, of phenomena and of ideas and thereby accumulating information about them. Investigations and results should be patently replicable by any competent researcher using similar equipment and methods. This is science as developed in the laboratory or classroom or through theoretical speculation and, via many of the books offered here, it may include a Torah and Talmudic basis. Technology means the practical, commercial or industrial application of scientific discoveries by inventors, engineers, architects, designers, industrialists, financiers and others.

Inventions and discoveries of earlier times may appear trivial when compared with those of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. One should not forget the historical environment in which the scientists and technologists of distant centuries and millennia worked. The priests who prepared the sacred oil for Temple ceremonies are likely to have been as scientifically and technically advanced in their times as nuclear physicists and biologists are in ours.

I am always looking for books which may be offered for sale here. If you are an author or publisher and you have a suitable book (or books) which fall within the context of Jewish science and technology as defined in the previous paragraph, then please contact me. I am also interested in acquiring second-hand books.

The eight-branched menorah is sometimes used as a logo in Jewish science-related matters. The symbolism is as follows: according to Jewish tradition, the number of sciences is seven and they are astronomy, geometry, psychology, natural science, language, mathematics and liberal arts which together with the knowledge of G-d in the era of the Messiah total eight.

Whilst Torah and Talmud are often cited as the only worthy object of study, they are not the only worthy subject and the creative involvement of Jews, whether Traditional, Orthodox or Reform, occurs in all fields of science and technology.
